Dear friend, Psalm 42:8 says, “The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song will be with me, a prayer to the God of my life.” This Psalm was written by the sons of Korah during David's time. It appears they worshipped in the temple and composed this song when David was hiding from his own son. David had fled from his palace and was far from God’s temple. In his longing for the presence of God, he penned these heartfelt words. That is why he says in verse 7, “Deep calls to deep.” He cried out to God with a deep sense of despair. In verse 3, he admits, “My tears have been my food day and night.”
Yet, even in this deep despair, David makes a remarkable statement of confidence, declaring, “By day the Lord directs His love; at night His song is with me.” This is a kind of prayer offered to God, a beautiful expression of trust in His unfailing care. God never despises the prayer of the destitute. He pours out His love abundantly from His storehouse, and His mercies never run out.
When we cry out to Him, God is awake through the nights with us. Sometimes, we wake up in the morning with tears in our eyes, but even then, His mercies are there waiting for us. In those moments, God speaks to us through His Word. Many times, I have experienced Him speaking directly to my heart through a verse. Sometimes, He even mentions a specific verse from the Bible, and I find myself meditating on that verse all night long.
As the morning dawns, the promise in His Word brings immense comfort and strength. His mercies are new every morning. Though we may read the same verses over and over again, they never grow old because “His mercies are new every morning.”
At night, when our worries seem to reach their peak, that is often the moment God chooses to fill us with His presence. In those sacred moments, a song rises up from our hearts. I remember our daughter, Stella Ramola, saying that when she was preparing to release a song album, the Lord often gave her the songs during the night.
When we draw closer to God’s presence, He gives us a new song, which is His song. God Himself becomes our song, dear friend. And as we stay close to Him, prayer and praise naturally flow together, bringing forth a melody from within us. Even today, may the Lord command His lovingkindness to you. May His song be with you always!
PRAYER:
Loving Father, thank You for commanding Your lovingkindness over my life each day. Thank You for staying awake through my nights, hearing my cries, and comforting me. Your mercies are new every morning, and Your Word strengthens my weary heart. In moments of despair, please fill me with Your presence and renew my spirit. Let Your promises keep echoing in my heart, bringing Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Let Your song rise within me, Lord, a melody of hope and joy that never fades. Be my song, my strength, and my refuge in every season of life. Draw me closer to You so that my prayer and praise will flow in harmony with Your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
